In a solemn ceremony chaired by Minister for town planning and urban development, Celestine Ketcha Kurtesse and Minister for sports and physical education Narcis Muele Kombi  in the Yaoundé Sport Palace yesterday August 27, 22 keys of social housed was offered to the 1990 Indomitable Lions or representatives. The houses come as a gift from the Head of State President Paul Biya to the players 30 years after the band astonishingly came out of the quarter finals of the 1990 World Cup tournament in flying colors as the first African selection to have ever reach that stage of the tournament. The glorious Tataw Eta Stephen and co group in an 8th June 1990 opening world cup match beat the would be world champion Argentine selection that comprised in it, the then world best footballer Diego Armando Maradona. For the gift to final come to fruition, the players have repeatedly written letters of reminder for long.

However, Bertin Ebwelle, president of the players’ collective gave a thanks giving speech to the Head of State on behalf of his team mates. 30 years down the line, the players have waited for this day, they have all aged, some have died, in the likes of the then no: 10 shirted midfielder Mfede Luis Paul, no: 4 shirted defender Massing Benjamin and Captain Tataw Eta Stephen, defender and no: 14 shirt who died on the 31st of June and will be laid to rest tomorrow Saturday 29th August 2020 in Yaounde.

22 apartments of 1 living room, 3bedrooms, 1 kitchen, 2 toilets, 1 laundry space in the new social neighborhood among the houses just built by the ministry of housing and urban development in Yaoundé and Douala were given to the footballers amid disgruntlement of most of the players saying that the house were too low for their standard.  Roger Mila before this day said that they have not waited for 30 years to get such meager houses. “We will write back to the Head of state so that our real houses that he promised be given to us” Joseph Antoine Bell thinks that it is a gift and it should not be refused. “I did not think to judge the kind of apartments. Let’s not forget that those apartments were not specifically built for us”, he said.
