Following the death of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza Munday 8th June 2020 from a heart attack, there was doubt about who was to assume office pending the sworn in of the new president elect. But the country’s constitutional court was timely to prevent further turmoil by précising that president elect Evaristus Ndayishimiye was going to be president as soon as possible.  Legally speaking, the president of the parliament would have been the one to assume office pending the election of a new president according to the country’s law. But the civil cabinet decided to consult the court where the conclusion was brought out that Mr Ndayishimiye was going to be sworn in as president two months earlier.

General Evaristus Ndayishimiye was chosen by the then President Pierre Nkurunziza after it became problematic that he could not adjust the country’s constitution to run for a 4th term of office after ruling for 15years. An election was then held last month (May 2020) notwithstanding the risk of the coronavirus pandemic infection overwhelming the world. However, he had made the parliament vote a law that made him a supreme leader powerful than the president will a lot of advantages and privileges. It was rumored that Nkurunziza did not die of heart attack but of coronavirus, as his wife was earlier on flown to Tanzania for covid-19 treatment
