Today makes 31 years day after day that the first president of the then Federal Republic of Cameroon, and the United Republic of Cameroon died in Dakar, Senegal 30th November 1989. He had expressed the wish to be buried in his fatherland should he die one day. But 31 years after, the repatriation of his remains is still suspended in the political history of Cameroon, a country that he ruled for 26 years.
The day is a nostalgic one for the generations who knew the first president of Cameroon’s era. Comparisons of the common Cameroonian’s standard of living are being done here and there. But for the younger generation that are less than 40 years old, there is no comparisons to make since they have known just one president all along. Though the older generation, would have prefer their time, naturally. “In our time things were much more cheaper, life was easier than today. A whole lot of things have changed negatively now compared to then” an old man we met said.
