« I would like to tell our fellow citizens that we have a balance sheet, a social project and a vision for our country; a vision of stability, security, peace, development and happiness for all Ivorians.” These were the words of incumbent Ivorian President Alassane Dramane Ouattara before the press early this morning in Abidjan. President Ouattara had officially announced his candidacy for the October 2020 presidential election in a stadium full of supporters amid a lot of controversy.
The 78 years old is vying for a 3rd term of office which the opposition says is illegal. “The Ivorian constitution make provisions for only two terms of office, so it is illegal for Mr Ouattara to go in for another term of office” Konan Bedie said in France 24 television earlier this month.
Whereas another opposition leader, exiled Guillaume Soro said “Ouattara is an impostor”. He withdraws his candidacy from the election and says that he can guaranty that Alassane Ouattara will not be the next president of Cote d’ Ivoire. It is important to note that Soro’s candidacy and that of Laurent Gbagbo were rejected by the electoral commission in Cote d’Ivoire, both for their convictions by the court in their country. Soro for embezzlement and Gbagbo for bank robbery.
