ETHIOPIA: UNHCR WARNS AGAINST LOOMING HUMANITARIAN CRISIS ON ETHIOPIAN REFUGEES AS WAR INTENSIFIES

About 27000 people fleeing the two weeks old civil war in their country Ethiopia into the northern Sudanese provinces of Kassala and Qadarif with about 4000 entering per day. Health experts say a lot of them enter the country with little or no personal belongings, looking very week from many days of walking. The United Nation has expressed its worries for a probable humanitarian situation that could spring up if the war continues with the same intensity. Abdullah Suleman, head of Sudanese Commission for refugees held talks with officials of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the Health Ministry of Qadarif province to discuss means of providing shelter and relief to the increasing refugees.

So far, the humanitarian agency continues to distribute blankets and sleeping mats. The World Food Program is distributing highly protein biscuits. Some hot meals are being provided by Muslim Aid.  The spokesman of the UN refugee agency said the rate at which the refugees are entering neighboring Sudan, a full-scale humanitarian crisis is unfolding. The fighting in the Ethiopia’s Tigray region is intensifying as Prime Minister Abiy Ahamed’s national troops are determine to deal with the Tigray People’s Liberation Force (TPLF) rebels.
