8th June 1990 – 8th June 2020, time has rushed pass by that Cameroon set the pace on world football as the first African nation to reach the quarter finals of a world cup tournament. Memories of that extraordinary match Cameroon VS Argentina are still fresh to all those who are 40 and above.
Back in Cameroon it was not difficult to hear people on the street say “if Cameroon took 8 goals in that match, then it was a good game for us” The Indomitable Lions was just an average African team that did not even cross the first round of the African Nations Cup tournament in Algeria that year. So many people did not believe the team could go far. It is true that it had talented players and one of the oldest player of the tournament, Roger Milla. This was the squat that pas paired against the World Champion, having in it the world best player, the dreaded midfielder Diego Armando Maradona.
In the minds of all football observers, Cameroon had no chance in that match. Especially that before that start of the match, Maradona juggled the ball with his shoulders. That send chill down the spines of fans and spectators in the field. But as the match started, the story changed. At the second half, from a seemingly simple free kick taken by Emmanuel Kunde from the left to the right of Argentina keeper Pompidu, Francois Omam Biyik sent a historic header that wrote Cameroon’s name in history as they opened score in that match, and went with the score to win that match. It was unbelievable but true.
